Could Your Next Main Pedi Turn Into A Nasty Infection?
Our nature is to be trusting. To walk into a spa or salon for a manicure or pedicure and assume that the entire staff is committed to our safety and hygiene. Why wouldn’t they be? If you saw a blaring lack of cleanliness, like mildew in the foot bath, you would leave. However, most unsanitary spa practices aren’t that obvious. The risks of poor hygiene are real and can result in warts, fungus, or a dangerous bacterial infection. Here’s what you need to know.
Looks Can Be Deceiving
I flew to a friend’s wedding where we engaged in a common bridal party ritual—group main pedis. I didn’t think twice about the spa as I was caught up in the fun and festivities. Upon arrival, I saw a clean and elegant spa that my friends had been going to for years. But the level of cleanliness required in a spa setting goes beyond visible aesthetics.
How My Bridal Party Pedicure Turned Into A Bacterial Infection
Just 2 days after my pedicure I noticed that my toe was sore, the next day it was so red that I removed my polish to take a closer look. It didn’t look good, but I was still out of town and decided to wait until morning. By morning, my toe had started to ooze, and I rushed into an urgent care clinic. The doctor immediately identified a post-pedicure bacterial infection. She told me that I was lucky that it was minor and stressed how important it was that I came in ASAP. She said most people assume it will clear up in a few days, leading to an infection that can be quite severe. I was the only one in the bridal party to have the infection, but one is too many.
How To Tell If Your Spa Is Clean And Safe
From that moment on, I knew I had to be more mindful of where I have any and all spa services performed. So, I did a bit of research, and to my delight found that Elmm Spa has high standards for cleanliness and does everything just as they should. Here is what you should be looking for in your spa:
- Everyone must be certified. No matter what spa service you desire a certification ensures that training required for technique, cleanliness, and safety has been achieved.
- All mani pedi tools must be sterilized. All tools must be UV sterilized or liquid sterilized. Don’t be shy about asking and watching for verification.
- All surfaces should be disinfected between customers. Watch to see if all surfaces are cleaned between customers. Especially the manicure table and the footbath.
- Overall cleanliness should be high. If there isn’t enough attention to detail to keep the lobby, treatment areas, bathrooms, and floors clean—they may not be keeping their tools clean either.
Your goal is to look and feel beautiful so take the time to do a bit of research before heading to a new spa. If you live in the Brampton area we invite you to browse the services at Elmm Spa where quality and cleanliness are guaranteed!
